IPL 3: Turn of Events Part I

We are on the verge of reaching the end stage of IPL 3. At this point with just 17 matches left out of a total of 56 MI looks about certain to reach the semis and KXIP seems to be knocked out. Really? My this blog discuss about how KXIP could still qualify for the semis.

Lets talk about how its not the end of the road for KXIP. One thing is certain that they can not qualify without winning the rest of the matches. They have played 10 matches up till now and have only 4 points. So for them to qualify they need to win all of the 4 matches which means they end the league with 12 points on their name. Their next four matches are against MI, DD, DC and CSK. And not just the wins, they need a lot of fortune as well. So if those prayers Preity did at Vaishno Devi and has been doing before the start of every match are listened by the almighty then KXIP could experience the most exciting journey of all their IPL seasons. Winning it then would of course be the cherry on the cake.

Of course winning all their matches is the first brave step they need to take, and to help them in achieving this feat none other than Mumbai Indians, their first saviour, need to help them by winning all of their remaining matches. Mumbai Indians have played 9 matches up till now and have 14 points. So winning their remaining matches take them to 22 points and a finish at the top of the table. With these results the table look like this.

With these results in 8 matches for MI and KXIP we are left with 9 matches with 4 of those matches for Deccan Chargers and they just have 6 points on the table. Deccan Chargers could be their second saviour as they could hold many teams in the table from leaping across that 12 point mark set by KXIP now. Their matches would be against RCB, CSK, RCB and DD. So if they win all of their matches then it means nothing change in the above table except them having 14 points and thus qualifying for the semis. Something like this.

Pts. Table when KXIP wins all and MI, DC wins all other

With 5 matches as RCB v KKR, CSK v KKR, RR v RCB, CSK v DD, KKR v RR the situation is pretty simple for DD, to win their only match and make sure they qualify for the semis. If they don’t then it means CSK win their only match left and make sure they qualify. If they don’t that means KKR win either against RCB or RR and make sure they qualify. If they don’t that means RCB win their only match and make sure they qualify. If they don’t then that leaves 5 teams on 12 points and it comes to the Net Run Rate.

The Net Run Rate is in the hands of KXIP and to make it to the semis they not only need to win but win big and hope that none of the other teams make past through them.

At the moment the net run rate for the five teams in picture are as follows:

TEAM

NRR

KXIP

-0.700

DD

+0.287

RCB

+0.428

CSK

+0.159

KKR

-0.328

And with KXIP winning all its matches, DD losing all and RCB, CSK, KKR just one out of their remaining 5, 4, 4 matches it certainly means that their run rate is going down maybe even stay negative and only if KXIP can manage it above them.

At the moment its RCB v DC today and only if DC wins today, it all begins for them.

How Delhi could not even qualify for the semis...

Delhi Daredevils have played superbly in this tournament, no doubt about that. They deserve to be in the semis, even win the tournament for that matter, but this is IPL. What I mean by that is that there is no time for complacency, not even if you are the best. In the end you are supposed to beat the contenders and not just win for the sake of winning matches.

I thought of it the day before yesterday. May 14, 12:28 AM, that's what the creation that reads on the notepad file "delhinotqualifying". But lazy me, did not post it until now. Since then 4 matches have been played and one KKR vs DC is in progress right now so the table is very much rearranged since then. Tough luck for Mumbai losing it out this time, but that was in the plan...

So this is how the team stands right now. And this is what can happen..

If delhi loses all of its 4 matches and Bangalore,Punjab and Rajasthan wins all of its matches with Chennai winning its rest of the 2 matches as well which are not against Bangalore and Punjab this IPL could see
a turn around. That will result in Chennai and Rajasthan qualifying as top two teams and Delhi, Bangalore, Punjab fighting at same points for the two places. The net run rate factor that comes into the picture will give only one result and that is Bangalore and Punjab to qualify as winning matches will boost their run rate and for Delhi losing matches will mean a decline in run rate.

1.) Could Delhi lose all its matches?
2.) Could Punjab win all its matches?
3.) Could Bangalore win all its matches?
4.) Could Rajasthan win all its matches?
5.) Could Chennai win its other matches with Mumbai and Kolkata?

If answer to all the above five questions is "YES" then it would be
bye bye Delhi. The biggest turnaround ever that would be remembered for
a long time. But that seems far from possible considering the form
Delhi is in and the position Delhi is in. But then it wouldn't be
called "The Biggest Turnaround" just like that would it?

So this is what it read like on May 14, 12:28 AM. Since then the 4 matches that have been played are:

RCB vs CSK (May 14) RCB won
MI vs RR (May 14) RR won
KXIP vs DD (May 15) KXIP won
CSK vs MI (May 16) CSK won

If you read the 5 equations above you must have figured out that the 4 matches have satisfied them very well uptil now. You must be wondering how is that possible. Let's see how many points would each team have if the above equations are met.

Chennai 17
Rajasthan 17
Bangalore 16

Punjab 16
Delhi 16
Mumbai 13
Hyderabad 12 (+ 2/0)
Kolkata 3 (+ 2/0)
(All matches played except DC vs KKR)

As is evident from the table Chennai and Rajasthan finishes up as the top two teams with Bangalore, Punjab, Delhi fighting for the 3rd and 4th place. The NRR would play a major role in deciding that and if Delhi lose out on that, they would not even see themselves for the semis.

I had purchased a ticket with you earlier under Air Deccan 1 for 1 free ticket offer. Today, when I needed to redeem it I got the above error for almost 20 different queries for flights from Delhi to Pune.. I checked for 10th of jan, 11th of jan, 12th of jan, ... 17th of jan, 20th of jan, 28th of jan and so on for february, march, april, may. Its hard to believe that you do not have tickets available for this sector for the coming 5 months. I tried it at two different places and two different web browsers, firefox and IE 6.0.

Whatelse, I called up your customer care number and spoke to one Miss poonam located at Thane, Mumbai(as she told me). I asked her to book the ticket for me using the promotional code. She tried it and told me that she is seeing an available flight from Delhi to Pune, Air Deccan on 11th of January and 17th of January. So I asked her to book it for me. She replied that currently there is an IVRS problem going on since past 24 HRS. and if she tries to book it for me, the transaction might not get completed and "us case mein aapka hi loss hoga". Further she told me that "abhi engineer to kar rahe hain par pata nahi kab tak sahi hoga and SUGGESTED me to try booking it again. I followed all the steps she told me to

and at the end it was

I tried it again five times for five different dates but every time it was the same error. I told her to book it anyway but instead she again gave me reasons about IVRS problems and told me "book it soon before the offer ends"???? I asked her "how do I book it", to which she had no answer.

And what more.. I tried submitting this blog in their blog sections and this is what happens...
